Pirate Roy sets sail for Leigh Folk Festival

ONE old pirate loves the Leigh Folk Festival so much he will be setting sail from Dundee overnight to take his place on stage.
Roy Mette, from Southend, is a regular at the event and wouldn't miss it for the world, which is why he is heading back south from Scotland on Saturday, after performances north of the border, to play at the Peterboat, in Old Leigh, at 5.30pm on Sunday.
Best known for his solo acoustic work, or his three and five piece blues/rock collaborations, the Roy Mette Band, this year's very different format will follow a new theme of rum, treasure chests and treachery on the high seas.
Roy has just released an acoustic based album of 14 original tracks, Pirates of the East Coast of the Americas and the Caribbean Sea, telling mostly true tales of famous pirates and their activities in the golden age of sea thieving, between 1690 and 1730.
These include the hanging of Captain Kidd at Wapping, the dipping of his body in tar and his display in a metal cage at Tilbury Point for a number of years. Other characters include the infamous Black Beard, Calico Jack Rackham and his companion Anne Bonny, who went to sea dressed as a man
"This is primarily a folk album in contemporary styles telling true stories," said Roy. "I haven't had so much fun writing music for ages. There are now 38 songs in the series and people keep saying I should tour it as a stage show.
"The music will appeal to anyone who likes acoustic music and story telling - the album isn't all sea shanties and seaweed in your wellies .It has a traditional flavour and I truly believe there's something for everyone to enjoy."
The album is receiving radio airplay in America and being used to help dig up real pirate treasure on the other side of the pond. The wreck of Black Beard's ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, is being excavated as an archaeological project off the coast of North Carolina and Roy's music will be used in its pod casts
Another track, Jean Lafitte, has been donated to a charity in New Orleans, which plans to release a pirate themed album to raise funds to replace musical instruments for children lost in hurricane Katrina. More information is available at www.myspace.com/captainrumbucket
