KNIGHTS on horseback and robots were just some of the strange characters which entertained people at a festival to raise money for St Luke's Hospice.

More than 2,000 people attended the Tilbury Festival at the Gateway Academy, in St Chad's Road, on Saturday.

Crowds watched as the Knights of Middle England jousted and eagles and falcons flew overhead during the day's special displays.

Titan, a 10ft tall robot, squirted water and sang songs to the delight of both children and adults.

Organiser Allison Jones said: "We decided to put on a festival in Tilbury to highlight the fact the hospice looks after people in Thurrock as well as Basildon.

"The jousting was a display of real horsemanship and Titan the Robot was absolutely superb - even grown men followed him around to see what he was getting up to."

People were also entertained with displays from paintballers and dogs.

Mrs Jones added: "The money hasn't been counted yet, but we hope to have raised a good amount for the hospice.

"Everyone really enjoyed themselves and had a fantastic time."
