Southend coach Kris gets Barbarians call
SOUTHEND Rugby Club's forwards coach Kris Chesney has been named in a 30-man Barbarians squad.
The 34-year-old, who plays for Saracens, has been selected by Cardiff Blues boss David Young.
And Chesney told the Echo he was over the moon at being called up for games against Belgium, Ireland and England at Twickenham.
"It's just fantastic," he said.
"It's a great thing to be a part of and I was delighted to receive the letter of confirmation which let me know I had been picked."
Chesney can play as flanker, second row or a number eight and has been joined in the squad by discarded England duo Lesley Vainikolo and Iain Balshaw.
Three other England players - Danny Grewcock, Mark Regan and Andy Gomarsall - have also been picked, along with Wales captain Gareth Thomas who looks set to make his Baa-Baas debut.
The first match takes place against Belgium on Saturday before they face on Ireland, at Gloucester's Kingsholm ground, on Tuesday 27.
The biggest game against England follows on Sunday June 1 and Chesney is desperate to be selected.
"It would be amazing," said Chesney who last played for Barbarians against Wales four years ago.
"I'll be working hard and will hopefully do enough to get picked."
On top of that, Chesney is also fully focused on his role at Warners Bridge.
He will continue to put the club's forwards through their paces next season and is confident that the Seasiders can enjoy another season of success.
"There's a good set up down there and I enjoy being a part of it," said the St.Albans based Chesney whose wife also comes from Southend.
"I've been doing it for three seasons now and am looking forward to the training starting again."
