Plan for flats thrown out
CONTROVERSIAL plans to replace a house with six flats have been thrown out by Basildon Council.
Councillors rejected an application for the land, in Lion Lane, Billericay, after MP John Baron, Billericay Town Council and 550 people objected.
The two-storey building, would have contained six two-bedroomed flats, and had parking for eight cars.
It was refused on the grounds it would have been overdevelopment of the site.
The committee also ruled the proposal would have disrupted traffic in Lion Lane and the nearby High Street, and harmed the character of the area.
MP Mr Baron said: "I think it was overdevelopment. I think any planning application should be in keeping with local surroundings.
"I also objected on transport grounds, as it would have caused a bit of a problem."
John Buchanan, chairman of Billericay Town Council's planning committee, said: "We objected on highway safety grounds because of the difficulty of more cars going in and out of the entrance to the High Street.
"The proposal would also have changed the character of the street by having such a large building put there."
