Blues stadium
Ron: A pivotal moment for our club
|
| Ron Martin |
SOUTHEND United is now just inches away from its new 22,000-seater stadium, after a Government announcement it would almost certainly go ahead at Fossett's Farm.
Just two small legal issues now stand between the club and its new ground, in a move Blues chairman described as the "biggest day in the club's history".
Speaking from the team's current Roots Hall ground, a delighted Mr Martin said building work would start at the end of the summer and he hoped the stadium would be finished for the start of the 2010 season.
He estimated the total cost of the complex to be around £50million and said he hoped the decision would be a catalyst to boost Southend's chances of promotion this season.
He said: "I think it will have a positive impact on the side. We're just outside the playoffs now with a game in hand and I hope this will give us an increased momentum and impetus.
"With these new facilities, I think we'll be able to attract better players because this is going to be a fantastic facility.
"I don't want to go over the top, but I really believe it will be an architectural masterpiece."
Mr Martin said there were a couple of small legal issues to be ironed out before final approval was granted - that of affordable housing provision and the ownership of one piece of land - but he was confident this would happen quickly.
He added: "I'm delighted for myself and the hard work of the team and all the Southend supporters.
"We've waited many years for this and it will take Southend out of the lower echelons of the football league and means we will be able to compete in the Championship.

Given this government's appalling indecision (as well as total incompetence of course) on anything of importance, my bet is on another enquiry at best. I hope I'm wrong.

I expect the decision will be Yes - providing the proposed grassed area in the centre of the stadium has 'affordable housing' built on it
(ie prices starting at £1M)
I am sure there will be a positive answer
such as 'after a further enquiry proposed for 2013'
I really am keeping my fingers crossed for this development
though.

Oh well, the dream is over, southend have now finally fallen to the hands of Money makers. Historic Ground, will now be paved over for many people to live on.

On a more positive note, this is a brilliant decision - great news for the club and for the town as a whole, it'll keep people in the area for shopping and leisure and stop them having to resort to going to Basildon. It'll also hopefully be enough of a threat to make the council and Renaissance Southend buck up their ideas and do a good job in the town centre.
Up the Blues!

J, I shall be wagging my finger at you on Saturday, young man.
We can stagnate and die, or we can change and grow.
I vote for change and growth. Roots Hall is incapable of being economically redeveloped; but the FF plans allow this club to grow, to provide us with long-term funding, and to give us the firm base that will allow us to step up financially to the Championship, which is a level at which we believe we can all compete.
This club used to enjoy 20,000 crowds in the 1950s... wouldn't it be nice to see gates like that in 2010?
Well done, Ron - this is a huge success for you and the club. Time to get that JCB out now and get digging!

I still think this is double standards.
If it were the government trying to build on this green land rather than a football club owner, this thread would be swimming in bile and vitriol.
I have no problem with a new stadium for Southend United, but that's only a small part of this development. It's all about property, not football.

Roots Hall was great, but it's just not fit for purpose as an all-seater stadium. The leg-room is suitable for Snow WHite's friends and kids and the views are appalling.
Time to move onwards and upwards.
As for money makers, how long would you expect the club to last without these "moneymakers"?
See Luton Town for details.

All we need now is a team to attract 22000 paying supporters 23 ( cup runs) times a year to justify the disruption.
Now the louts will not be able to say "We have nowhere to go".

This is fantastic news! I can't say how delighted I am that Southend United and the town have just taken a massive step forward!
Ron Martin came, planned and single handedly did what many before failed over the last 20 years!
Well done Ron! Now, just the financing and ownership to be sorted?!

Well Done SUFC.
We can all be proud.
Now that we have the go ahead, we must ensure that SBC and Renaissance Southend have nothing more to do with it, otherwise you just know it will be c0ck-up after c0ck-up with a whole lotta un-necessary consultancy!
Who reckons the council will try to take as much credit for this as they can for use as ammo in the upcoming local elections?

And what about the poor people visiting their 'passed' relatives in the cemetery in Sutton Road, not very nice to do this with all the yelling going on at a football match, not to mention the vandalism that goes with it!!!! DO US ALL A FAVOUR AND STAY AT ROOTS HALL - the supporters have already ruined it so let them use it.

You people obviously don't live very close to where this new stadium is going to be built. Have none of you considered what the traffic is going to be like! The whole area will be gridlocked. The surrounding roads can't even take the existing amount of traffic during a normal weekend, let alone one that is hosting a football match!!! God help Southend when this is built.........

In response to Dave Turner and Today.
Im guessing that neither of you have been to Roots Hall in the last few years, and seen that "Yobs" and "louts" are not the kind of fans we attract. Southend is a family club, and you'd be surprised im sure by the types of people you'd meet inside the ground.
Still, while your stuck with your mid 70's views, sitting at home on your sofa, away from us scary thuggish oafs, wathcing your favourite premiership teams, please spare a thought for us true football fans enjoying REAL football, in our lovely new stadium ;-)

I live around the corner from Roots Hall and traffic can be a bit of a nightmare for about an hour before and 30 mins after KO and parking is a problem for a bit but it's not a huge problem. I doubt the new stadium will cause too much more disruption. I saw one person say he'd be made 'a prisoner in his own home'! ha ha. What a joke. I love the fact we have a fairly decent football team in our town. To see the swathes of supporters walk past my house on match days gives me a nice sense of community. I'll miss it but you need to move forward and the new stadium will help with that.

Well I'm just glad that I don’t live anywhere near there.
But I feel very sorry for all those visiting either the Southend Cemetery or the Crematorium once it has been built.
Its bad enough with traffic around that area already, you can imagine what it will be like with 22000 "Supporters" doing what "Supporters" do best - screaming their heads off.
Won’t it be lovely - all so we can watch a game of football? Bully for them.

BTW - there are no services on Saturdays, Sundays or weekday evenings so the football fans will not disturb mourners.

"Won't it be lovely"? Probably not, as football fans do tend to talk and occasionally sing on their way to the grounds, and once inside.
Maybe, just don't visit the beloved deceased every other Saturday between three and five?

This is great news for both the football club and town. Southend United is really becoming a community club and the approval means this can be enhanced even further. Well done to Ron Martin and all those at the club who have worked so hard for this.

My Grandad's ashes are at Sutton Road Crematorium, I am rather emotional at the thought that the roar of the Southend faithful will be close to him for the first time in 25 years
(Or I would be if i ignore the fact that he is dead so is none the wiser !)
As for the disturbance there will be 25 games a season there, at 90 minutes a game (90 minutes of "noise" during the game and a max of 90 minutes extra traffic around the kick off time)
Thats 37.5 hours of "disruption" a year
hardly worth bothering about is it ?,
Would you complain if someone parked outside your house for 6 minutes a day, or your neighbour made a bit of noise playing with his kids for 6 minutes a day.
This could be a major boost for the town

Southend Utd Football Club has gone to great lengths to generate a Family atmosephere. They provide excellent entertainment to thousands of local people. The new stadium is being built AWAY from residential areas unlike the current location. I applaud the club for their efforts and every SUFC fan should be proud that we have encouraged many more new and young supporters to the games. Well done the Shrimpers and I look forward to the Opening Ceremony.

Worried,
If you live near the proposed site you can't be earning that much money or are you an eccentric millionaire. If you don't live near the site why are you worried. Perhaps you would prefer the land was used for the 30 traveller pitches the council have got to find. This is hardly countryside just a bunch of fields no one had access to anyway. Grow up.

What a load of bull! I can't believe there are so many people actually believing that Southend United will actually improve just because they have a newer stadium!!! Come on, wake up.

As a life long fan of sufc this is a very sad day.Any remote chance of standing to watch a match are over, not to mention smoking and sitting next to todays new boring football fans. The new ground will have no soul at all.

The team will need to achieve Championship sttus to even begin thinking about the volumes of traffic and people some seemed concerned about. As for the location, super, it's closer to where I live now and I'll be happy to have supporters walking past my house!!

Great news!
To those who say that it won't make a difference to the club's playing quality; that is possible but it will give the club potential for higher average gates and financial stability that tends to enable a club to attract the better players. No guarantee but it offers the chance. That was the problem with the latest foray into the Championship, a maximum gate that provided too small an income to pay the wages required to attract the right quality players, at least not without putting the finances of the club in jeopardy.
To those who object about the traffic, I live within half a mile of the site and I really can't see it being that much of a problem, certainly much less than the traffic that would be generated by it being solely a retail park.
My Dad's ashes reside in the Garden of Rememberance at the Crematorium and I'm pretty sure that as a lifelong follower of the Blues and a season ticket holder for many years he would be delighted to know they were moving in next door and that he would have the chance of hearing the roar of the crowd every time Blues score a goal.
To all the antis on here; you had your democratic chance to make your objections at the original planning stages and again at a public inquiry. On this occasion you lost, you fought a good fight but the decision went the other way, that's life and no matter how much you carry on whining the decision has been made, accept that fact and work with everyone else to now make it a successful outcome for both the Blues and the town.
To Ron Martin, thanks for all your persistance; when it all looked very black after the Jobson years you took up the baton and carried on; thanks for being someone who looks forward not backwards.

A sad day for the locals who'll now have to put up with this stadium and all the associated problems it'll bring.

I have to agree with 'Dai Larfin' (great name by the way). A sad day for the locals who'll now be able to walk across the road to shop. Sad also for those that hope to get work at the new shops and hotel etc. And if you think they've got it bad, just think about those poor people who'll be living in the affordable housing so close to the ground! ;-)
And me. I'll have further to go to the match!!!

This is a great great thing for southend but why oh why are there no parking spaces??? Southend council seem to have some fear of car parks...
Never mind with the retail park this should kill off the rest of the high street and then people will be able to park there...

This is typical of the selfish sort of response you get all over the country to any development of sports facilities or stadiums.
There are 168 hours in a week and the Stadium will be used for football matches on average once a week causing at least 4 hours of inconvenience if there is any at all!
These are the same people who then moan that kids are getting fat, they have no interests, they don't play out like we used to etc etc.
If you don't allow sports facilities, you don't develop sporting hero's for kids to emulate and they all sit at home on their lard a***s playing computer games and watching the goggle box!
My parents ashes are at the Crematorium and both would be delighted that something positive is actually happening for Southend.

If this were about football, we wouldn't have yet more flats or an out of town shopping centre, two things Southend needs like a hole in the head.
Face it, it's just another property deal.

Why do the NIMBYS seem to think that their lives will now be disrupted to such a vast extent? I live nearby Roots Hall and apart from a bit of a parking squeeze in the few roads along side the ground at matchtimes....there is no problem at all.
As for the peace and tranquility at the crematorium and cemetary....has no one noticed the noise, pollution and big lorries using Stock Rd and Temple farm? No I didnt think so!
Im even amazed at those retailers who are complaining about losing custom from the High St......I doubt if they will have room for another pound shop anyway!

This is good news for the club and I think Ron Martin has done a tremendous job, as have Tilson and Brush. Four years ago SUFC could have dropped out the league and Ron Martin could have used this as an excuse to wind the club up and redevelop the Roots Hall site which Martin-Dawn owned. Instead he bought his partner out who did not share his vision for the club and has taken things forward. Of course Mr Martin will no doubt make money out of this deal but the club will no doubt prosper as well. As for disruption what are we looking at; a couple of hours for say twenty five days of the year and do not forget that this is existing disruption that is just being moved a mile up the road. Personally I will be sad to see Roots Hall go but such is the way of things these days. Up the Blues and lets see three points against the hatters tomorrow.

Its bad enough now getting out of this side of Southend!
Perhaps Mr Martin could make his own transport available to those of us who need (in emergentcy) to get to the Hospital, or to other events out of Southend ON MATCH DAYS!!

Look at teams like Reading, Wigan and Bolton. These are at best middle ranked teams, who thanks to new grounds and investment, have made good efforts in sustaining in the Premiership. With this new ground, and ability to attract better players, Southend could easily become an established Championship team, with aspirations one day of playing in the Premiership. Our ground last season conveyed the message that we were a small team punching above our weight, and was no surprise to anyone when we went down. Hopefully as well, it will attract some of the uncommitted snobby Tottenham and West Ham fans, who wouldnt be seen dead at Roots Hall.

As a current season ticket holder I have to agree. The team will need to achieve Championship sttus to even begin thinking about the volumes of traffic and people some seemed concerned about. As for the location, super, it\'s closer to where I live now and I\'ll be happy to have supporters walking past my house!!
Of course it will make a difference.

All the commentary on southend in the championship, plus the attitudes of all my friends at university who supported championship teams, was about how poor and small Roots Hall was for a championship level team. It was the same for Colchester United (*cough* scum), who play in an even poorer ground but are currently building a new one to raise their profile. Same story again with Brighton & Hove Albion, who play at some sort of temporary athletics ground at the moment while they await planning permission!
Wigan and Reading used to be absolute nothing teams i nthe lower leagues until they received the infrastructure and investment necessary to take them forward. Don't see why it might not happen here one day.

I live at stMarys Court, the place that will be pulled down just to line the pockets of a property developer. this is not for a new stadium this is for greed and profit but ofcause my words fall on deaf ears because most people will not loose there home so why worry.

Another nail in Southend's coffin courtesy of what must be the most cynical council in the country. Great for the football club (maybe!) - a disaster for thousands of other traders and residents in the town.

This is the best news we have had for many a year. Let's hope the road improvements are carried out at the same time. I was alarmed to read that the Liberals did not want the Priory Park dualing now and have some idea that the junction with Fairfax Road with solve the problems ~ Hello!

As for the disturbance there will be 25 games a season there, at 90 minutes a game (90 minutes of \"noise\" during the game and a max of 90 minutes extra traffic around the kick off time)
Thats 37.5 hours of \"disruption\" a year
hardly worth bothering about is it ?,
Would you complain if someone parked outside your house for 6 minutes a day, or your neighbour made a bit of noise playing with his kids for 6 minutes a day.
This could be a major boost for the town</b>
My Dad was cremated there, he went to every match he could from when they played at the Kursaal up until the day cancer had sapped his strength away. I hope he will now be able to watch the Blue's once again. Keep cheering Dad :-)

The death of the high street? Pull the other one. The high street died the day we started letting all these pound shops, primark and peacocks in.
Cheap shops equal cheap people. The reality is Southend high street is dirty and smelly and full of no mark shops.
Can't wait for another pikey store to open in the new Victoria Plaza.

Well Done Dave I'm with you!!
We do not go shopping at Southend because of all the Pikey People!
I once spoke to that prat Grahame Longley Liberal about the High Street being such a dump and all that political maniac could say was 'It is not that bad we have a French market coming soon' he then got in his space rocket and went back to another planet.
What a great idea A New Stadium backed by MONEY!! worth having ONLY PRIVATE INDUSTRY make things happen and are then run properly!!
Councils fail in whatever they run eventually just look at all the failures of Councils is this area, run down parks littered with dogs crap, run down swimming pools that are either filthy or contaminated with asbestos, graffiti covered buildings in parks, broken glass, groups of uncontrolled yobs, cliffs that are like Third World jungles.
Then take a look at the privately run sports facilities, and money backed premises like Phil Millers you might pay more but that's the price of nice things!!and worth every penny when you walk around Phil Millers you feel less threatened because the money taken makes it run correctly!!
Councils should stick to essential services only and allow private industry to run leisure!!

Schraube
I agree with you when I look at all the crap hole places Councils run then look at places like Virgin Active I agree.
Councils start well intentioned then elections get in the way and money is withdrawn to 'do up' run down estates which quickly fall into disrepair!!
Bring on the real English Party!!!

I am not going to get in to the debate as to wheather this is good or bad for southend I have my opinions as others have theirs its a free country. What I do object to are the people who keep insisting we are all yobs and thugs, I am a 47 year old grandmother who has been supporting SUFC for many years, I have no intention of urinating in anyones garden or beating anyone up, I will carry on watching my team as I have always done. As for traffic chaos its once every 2 or 3 weeks for goodness sake, hardly melt down is it.

Wonder when this stadium is going ever start being built. If Colchester can build a new stadium in a couple years or so. Why can't Southend. Sometimes I wonder how urgently they want a new stadium.

Of course Southend Council will have to have yet another consultation before any thing that looks remotely like a stadium appears.

southend united are terrible. The stadium is just another excuse for more building of houses/retail parks on the few open spaces that remain. It seems that they are looking at google maps and trying desparately to cover up anything thats green in favour of more concrete. The only good thing about this eyesore going up will be if they put concerts on there but somehow I doubt that would happen unless the council get a cut of the profits! Plus has no one thought of what will happen to the boot sale. How am I going to buy a set of burnt saucepans and dead peoples stuff now??

It seems that all they care about is making as much money as the can from the town. Thing is, I cant see anywhere thats improved? The town is going to turn into one big supermarket soon
